Leon Mandel, age 77, of Millcreek, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at his residence.
He was born in Erie on July 7, 1934, son of the late David & Gertrude Wexler Mandel.
Leon was the owner/operator of the family business; Mandel's Department Store, in Union City and also worked 17 years as a salesman at Diamond's Men's Store. He proudly served in "A" Troop, 3rd Infantry Division as Tank Commander during the Cold War in Germany. He was a Scout Master through Brith Sholom, on the board of Washington Trail Council as activities chairman and the Boy Scouts of America. He was a past member of the American Legion Post. Leon was a member of the Board of Directors of Temple Anshe Hesed and the Jewish Community Council.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Mandel.
He is survived by his wife of 47 ½ years, Janice Pinski Mandel; two daughters, Debra Wisniewski and her husband, John of Erie and Julie Feldman of Pittsburgh. Six grandchildren, Nicholas, Joseph, Michael, & Chad Feldman as well as Alyssa & Andrew Wisniewski. His brother, Edward Mandel, along with his wife, Elaine, and their two daughters also survive.
Friends may attend a service on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Temple Anshe Hesed, 930 Liberty Street.
Burial will follow in Anshe Hesed Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation, 130 West 8th Street, Erie, 16501 or to Temple Anshe Hesed, 930 Liberty St., Erie.
