On Sunday, July 22, 2012, Louise L. "Lulu" Lyons, age 84, the matriarch of our large, loving family, passed into the waiting arms of her late husband Jack.
Louise Leocadia Bargielski Metzger Lyons was born in Erie, Pa., a first generation American, on June 16, 1928 to Teofil and Leocadia Elizabeth Pelkowski Bargielski. Both were immigrants from Poland. Lulu's mother died when she was nine years old, and her father, when she was 15. Being the youngest girl, Mom often told us how she had six mothers growing up.
Lulu attended St. Stanislaus Grade School, class of 1942, and East High School, Class of 1946.
She worked from the age of 15, beginning at the A & P, and eventually working as a waitress at various restaurants in Erie. Her last waitress job was at Peoples Restaurant, where the customers called her "Sarge", for her no nonsense way of bossing everyone, even the owner, around.
Previously, she had worked at Dominick's, The Manor Inn, and The Beachcomber, where she was also the baker. In the 60's and 70's, she also baked beautiful wedding and special occasion cakes.
No matter where mom went, she knew someone, and her sense of humor couldn't be beat.
Mom was a member of the Siebenbuerger Club and the Thursday knitting group at the Mercy Hilltop Center, where she made hundreds of hats and scarves for the poor and homeless.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her six sisters: Florence Bargielski, Theresa Pinczewski, Josephine "Jo" Bille, Gertrude "Gert" Jasek, Dorothy Nowakowski and Emilie Bargielski; three brothers: Casimir "Charlie", Bernard "Ben", and Chester "Chet". Her "honey", husband John "Jack" Lyons, left this life on April 21, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her former husband, George W. Metzger.
She is survived by her three children ("You'll always be my kids"): Ellen Metzger Boyajian Hilbert Gigogne, husband David; Donald G. Metzger, Eugene R. Metzger, wife Sarah Snyder. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren: Eric J. Boyajian, Tina M. Boyajian Gannon, Tobias "Toby" M. Hilbert, fiancée Danielle Bly, and Emily A. Boyajian, fiancé Nate Sayre with whom mom made her home, Jason Metzger, Brian E. Metzger, Kimberly Metzger Harris, husband Vincent, Heather L. Metzger, fiancé Jeremy Stankowicz, Davis Gigogne and Travis Gigogne.
Grammy also had seven great grandchildren: Joshua S. Anderson, Mary E. Boyajian, Jonathon R. Gannon, Amy L. Gannon, Jaya Sledge, Jerome Sledge, Beau Basile, and Baby Metzger, due in October. She was also lucky enough to have a great great granddaughter she adored, Kailey M. Boyajian.
Lula, as he called her, is also survived by her youngest brother and sidekick, Richard "Dick" Bargielski. Mom also leaves behind to cherish her memory, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, especially Theresa and Blair Crosby, and Teresa Snyder and all her friends at the Mercy Hilltop Center where she also volunteered.
Services were private at the convenience of the family.
Memorials may be made to Emmaus, 345 West 9th Street, Erie PA 16503, A.N.N.A. Shelter, 1555 East 10th Street, Erie PA 16511, or the charity of your choice.
