Barbara J. Bowen, 79, of Erie, died peacefully Sunday, July 29, 2012 surrounded by her children at UPMC Hamot after a brief illness.
She was born February 1, 1933, a daughter of the late Clement and Nancy (Beattie) Buerkle.

Barbara was a 1951 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh and received her teaching degree from Mercyhurst College in 1955. She retired in 1993 after many years of teaching in the Erie School District.

She was the President of the Erie Education Association for 4 terms and was on the Board of Directors for P.S.E.A.R. She also held numerous offices locally and county wide for the Democratic Party.

She loved her Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed attending the Erie Seawolves games.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. "Dick" Bowen, a son Richard C. Bowen, Jr. and a sister, Beverly Willis.

She is survived by, two daughters, Betsy Danowski and her husband, Dave and Susan Bowen and Walter "Wally" Fisher, all of Erie; a son, Michael P. Bowen and Carla Struble, of Largo, FL; three grandchildren, Amy Jean Bowen of Waynesboro, PA, Michael P. Bowen, Jr. of Buffalo, N Y and Taylor Danielle Bowen of California; two great grand children, Elliott Bowen and Quentin Algier both of Waynesboro, PA. Also surviving is a sister, Bonnie Smith and her husband Dick of Conneaut Lake, PA and a brother, C. Michael Buerkle, III and his wife Jan of Stuart, FL and her brother-in-law, E. Patrick Willis of Perry, OH.

Friends may call at the Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Road on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and are invited to attend services there on Wednesday at 11 am with the Reverend Charles McClung officiating.

Interment will be in Whispering Pines Cremation Garden.

The family graciously requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the family c/o Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Road, Erie, PA 16510 or to the organization of one's choice.
