John (Jack) Altenberger age 86 of Erie, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Edinboro Manor.
He was born on September 19th, 1925 in Corry, the son of the late John and Sarah Elizabeth Forrester Altenberger.
He was a graduate of Academy High School, Class of 1944 and also attended Penn State. He was a salesman all his life.
He was a partner in Anderson Vacuum Center and prior to that he was the furniture buyer at the Boston Store for 12 years. He has been a member of the Millcreek Lions Club since 1984, and served as Past President. He served as a Board member of the Lions Eye Bank of Northwestern PA for 25 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Helen Karr.
He is survived his wife of 63 years, Helen Jean Altenberger and two daughters, Linda Lewis of Erie and Carol Smith and husband Alan of Girard. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Emily Iannacchione and her husband Peter of Fairview, Geoffrey Lewis and wife Erin of Fairview, Bryan Lewis of Erie and Ian Smith of Berkeley, CA, one great granddaughter Siobhan Lewis and one great grandson Griffin Lewis and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 West 26th Street (at Powell Ave) on Monday from 7:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. William Coleman officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lions Eye Bank of NWPA, 5105 Richmond Street, Erie, PA 16509.
