Leon E. Briggs, age 80, of Summit Township, died on Friday September 21, 2012 at his residence.
Born in Champion, NY on January 4, 1932, he was a son of the late Elwood and Lottie Taylor Briggs.
He was a graduate of West Carthage High School in West Carthage, NY, Class of 1949. He was a Korean War era veteran of the United States Navy. He worked as a wireman at the General Electric Company for 23 years until his retirement in 1993. A member of Summit United Methodist Church; he was a member of VFW Post#740 in Edinboro, a member of the Forty et Eight where he was a former state commander; he was a member of the Chef de Gare, and the Waterford American Legion Post #285 where he had served a number of terms as past commander and also as the 29th District Commander. He enjoyed traveling and golfing with his wife.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Paul Briggs, a daughter, Marilyn Berry and a brother, Clifford Briggs.
He is survived by his wife, Florence A. LaFlamme Briggs, whom he married on June 30, 1984; two sons, Kevin Briggs, of Austin, TX, and Leon A. Briggs and his wife Michelle, of Centerville, PA; two stepsons, Thomas Sawdey, of Erie and Kenneth Sawdey and his wife Virginia, of Erie; two stepdaughters, Shirley Goldsmith, of Cumming, GA, Kristy Jaros, of Erie; and a son-in-law Joseph Janos, of Erie; three brothers, William Briggs and his wife Shirley, of Illinois, Theodore Briggs and his wife Millie, of Albany, NY and Wayne Briggs and his wife Frances, of Erie; and one sister, Rosemary Riley and her husband Tom, of Felt Mills, NY. He is further survived by fourteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home 2532 Norcross Road on Monday Sept. 24 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm and are invited to attend services there on Tuesday Sept. 25 at 11am with the Reverend Lee Pomeroy officiating. There will be Full Military Honors following services at the funeral home. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
