Marliss J. Smith, age 80, of Fairview, passed over on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Pleasant Ridge Manor West surrounded by her family. Born October 16, 1931 in Bessermer, MI., she was the daughter of the late Herman and Hilda Bradley Gustafson.
Marliss was a homemaker and worked as a volunteer at Hamot Hospital for over 30 years while being active as a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Girard. She enjoyed travelling and caring for her grandchildren as well as playing tennis and golf. She also enjoyed beach gatherings with her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Nancie Smith Newton in 2011. She is survived by her husband Charles W. Smith of 59 years; a daughter, Leslie Duss and her husband Matt of Alexandria, VA; two sons: David Smith and his wife Kathy of Millcreek and Tom Smith and his wife Curtis of Raleigh, NC, a son-in-law, Robert Newton of Fairview, as well as ten grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main St. East in Girard on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, which would have been Marliss's 81st birthday, at 11am in Burton's All Faiths' Chapel with Rev. Andrew Edwards, her pastor, officiating Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Ridge Manor, 8300 West Ridge Road, Girard, PA 16417. Burial will be held later in the Fairview Cemetery.
