Richard Henderson was born on June 30, 1928 in Reading, Pennsylvania to Pearl (Warne) and Richard Henderson, III.

He was an award winning architect, noted scholar and exceptional teacher.

He graduated from Cornell University's College of Architecture in 1952. After graduation, he moved to New York City where he lived his entire life.

Richard was a partner in the world renowned firm, Gwathmey, Henderson and Siegel. He joined The Cooper Union in 1967 as Adjunct Professor of Architecture. In 1972, he became a full time faculty member, and in 1982, was appointed Professor of Architecture and Associate Dean. He retired in October, 2000.

His principal areas of interest included the study and analysis of significant works of architecture as a didactic process, comparative formal structures, origins of conceptual geometrics and historic urbanism. His works have been exhibited widely, including the Museum of Modern Art and at the World's Fair in Osaka, Japan. He has earned many professional honors, including the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His works have been published extensively in leading architectural journals including Architectural Form, Architectural Record, The New York Times, Progressive Architecture, Architecture Plus, AIA Journal, Interiors, Better Homes and Gardens, House and Garden, The American Home and House Beautiful.

He died peacefully in Erie, Pennsylvania on November 2, 2009 in the presence of his sister, Jane Layden (Mrs. Paul W. Layden) and niece, Susan Layden Mehl.

Richard is survived by his sister, Jane Henderson Layden and her husband, Dr. Paul W. Layden; his nieces: Susan Mehl, Nan Keach, Kay Flanagan and Amy Crispen and their families, along with his nephew, Dr. Paul W. Layden, Jr.

Arrangements are being handled by the Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 602 West 10th Street, Erie PA 16502, 814-454-4551.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 7th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Cathedral, 230 West 10th Street, followed by a luncheon reception at the Erie Club.

Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Cooper Union in memory of Richard Henderson, in care of Michael Governor, Associate Director of Major Gifts, 30 Cooper Square, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10003.
