On Wednesday, November 4, 2009, Lionel (Lee) A. Janson, 82, finally got to meet "that BIG GUY upstairs", as he often referred to his heavenly Father. Lee succumbed to pneumonia after putting up a short but valiant fight with lymphoma of the brain.
He was the middle child of Armand and Lora Boule Janson, both deceased, born in Brooklyn, NY, on November 18, 1926. He was also preceded in death by his sister Eileen Kuchinski.
Lee attended Queen of All Saints grade school and graduated from George Westinghouse Trade School with a Machinist's diploma in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Motor Machinist Mate, 3rd Class, aboard a PT boat in the South Pacific during World War II and was Honorably Discharged in 1946.
Lee started in the painting profession with his father's company and continued that profession all of his working life. He was superintendent of the Painting Department of Sessinghaus and Ostergaard, Inc. for 20 years. He then continued as a partner of Contractors Decorating Service, a partner with his son in Da-Mar Associates, and retired in 1992. At that stage in his life, Lee realized that he had a talent for using an artist's brush and created many paintings for others to enjoy. In retirement Lee has busied himself with many hours of volunteer labor at his church (where he was a member of the Over-the-Hill-Gang), Habitat for Humanity, his vegetable garden, golf, and especially assisting his wife in their annual baking of over a hundred dozen Christmas cookies – which many friends looked forward to each year.
Over the years Lee had been very active with BSA 72, particularly encouraging many boys to become Eagle Scouts. He had been a Koinonian since 1987, always being a part of their weekends and was Rector of K101. Lee was a member of the Siebenbuerger Club and a charter member of Church of the Cross.
Lee is survived by his wife of 58 years, June Mowry Janson, a son and wife, David and Marcia Janson, daughter and husband, Jenette and Norman Olson; five granddaughters, Valerie Janson and her husband Stephen Hall, Stephanie Janson, Bethany, Kayla and Sarah Olson; and two great-granddaughters, Ellie and Abbie Hall. He is further survived by his sister, Norma Grzesik and her husband, Stefan, of Greenport, NY., as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call on Saturday, November 7th, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home 3801 West 26th Street at Powell Avenue and attend a memorial service on Sunday at the Church of the Cross at 5901 Millfair Avenue starting at 2 p.m.
Private interment will be in Erie Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Church of the Cross Parking Lot Fund, 5901 Millfair Road, Fairview, PA 16415 or Habitat for Humanity, 413 East 9th Street, Erie, PA 16503.
Lee's final words would be "AMA – Another Magnificent Accomplishment!"
