Cecelia "Ceil" Tanenbaum, age 89 of Erie, died Thursday, November 5, 2009 at her residence.

Born in Erie on March 28, 1920 she was the daughter of the late Kohlman and Rose Hohenstein Perell.

Ceil was a graduate of Academy High School, Class of 1938. Although, she had worked as a sales representative for both Fisher's Jeweler's and David's Jewelers, she was known as a wonderful homemaker; her family was her masterpiece.

She was the family matriarch and a surrogate mother to many; she had that heart to heart connection.

Ceil was always very active. She was involved with Temple Anshe Hesed Sisterhood; she was a den mother for eighteen years, took in a number of foreign exchange students and was a wonderful letter writer and kept in touch with countless people. She was a wonderful caregiver. She believed in human dignity, caring for at least five people in her home during their final days.

Ceil had notable musical talent; she was a violinist with the Academy High School Orchestra and the Erie Regional Orchestra.

She played Mahjong for many years, loved dogs, was a great baker; but her deepest love has always been her family, whether near or far.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Marion Davidow. Her sister, Jeannette Perell of Erie, survives her.

Ceil is also survived by her husband of 68 years, Sam Tanenbaum; five sons, Rabbi Roy D. Tanenbaum and his wife Loretta, of Toronto, Canada, Rabbi Irwin A. Tanenbaum and his wife Marta, of E. Amherst, NY, Robert J. Tanenbaum and his wife Esther, of Highland Park, NJ, Jerry L. Tanenbaum and his wife Roberta, of Haddonfield, NJ, and Mark D. Tanenbaum and his wife Ellie, of Erie; and 18 grandchildren, Rabbi Miriam, Keren-Ami, Eli, Tova, Shana, Isaiah, Leora, Jacob, Shoshana, Tzvi, Shlomo, Daniel, Sarah, Max, Philip, Solomon, Abbe and Jenna. She is further survived by 16 great grandchildren and 30 nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Friends may call at Temple Anshe Hesed 930 Liberty Street on Sunday from noon until the time of services at 1:00 p.m. with Rabbi John Bush and Rabbi Miriam Spitzer co-officiating.

Burial will be in Anshe Hesed Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Temple Anshe Hesed General Fund 930 Liberty Street Erie, PA 16502 or to the Canadian Yeshiva Rabbinical School 81 St. Mary Street Toronto, Canada M5S1J4.
