Walter P. Rambish, age 89, of Erie, died on Friday, January 29 at Fairview Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Pittsfield, PA on January 1, 1921, son of the late Joseph and Sophie (Furtak) Rambish.

Walt lived in Sheffield, PA from birth until after the end of WWII. He graduated from Sheffield High School where he played on their undefeated football team. He then joined the Navy but was a medical discharge after serving just a short while. He then attended Hoffman Business College in Warren, PA for a two year degree. He entered the Army at the onset of WWII where he gained the rank of Sgt. Major in an amphibious medical battalion serving in the South and Central Pacific and The Occupation of Japan. After the war, he moved to Erie where he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years, retiring in 1977.

He was a life member of the VFW Post 3390 and also a longtime member of the Elks Lodge 67 in Millcreek and St. George Church. He enjoyed fishing, deer and rabbit hunting, gardening and his lifelong hobby of cabinet making and woodworking which he learned by attending classes at the old Erie Tech School at 10th and Sassafras.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Stella Steinbaugh and Helen Bortnyck.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Martha (Bires) Rambish and two sons, Gary Rambish of Fairview and Dan Rambish of Millcreek. He is further survived by two grandchildren, Craig and Natalie Rambish of Erie, six nieces and six nephews.

Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 West 26th Street at Powell Ave., on Monday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to services there on Tuesday at 10am, with Rev. Msgr. Robert Brugger officiating.

Entombment will be at Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery immediately following.
