Heron De Leon Soto age 87, of Erie, died Monday, July 5, 2010 at his residence.

He was born on August 12, 1922 in Tampico, Mexico.

He studied at Gannon University attaining several doctoral degrees in philosophy and letters. He became a professor at Gannon and taught for more than 42 years and was loved and respected by his students. He also served there as student advisor to foreign students.

During his long life he served his community in many ways including; President of the JFK Center and member of the Board of Directors of GECAC and Community Health Net. He was also appointed Commissioner in the Governors office regarding help for minorities and the aged.

Heron loved his church and served as a long time member of the Knights of St. Patrick and as recently as several years ago traveled to Guatemala as a missionary working in the villages. He will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his children; Francisco De Leon Soto of Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, Lucero and Nora De Leon Soto of Mexico City, Mexico, Fredrick Ollinger "Samantha" of San Diego, CA., Amy Adams "Jamin Rubenstein" of Jacksonville, FL, and Andrew De Leon Soto "Izzy" Hornak of Erie. He also leaves four grandchildren; Carlos, Ziana, and Aaron De Leon and Jose Bernardo De Leon. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Friends may call at Burton Wintergreen Funeral Home, 2532 Norcross Rd. Erie, Pa., 16510 on Wednesday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. There will be a mass of Christian burial on Friday at 9:00 am at St. Patrick's Church, 130 East 4th Street, Erie, Pa. with Father William Sutherland officiating. Burial at a later date.
